Country House Extension, Winchester
The substantial extension and remodelling of a Listed building has transformed the house into an impressive family home. The extension has provided a 50% increase in living accommodation, alongside extensive landscaping work to the surrounding gardens of the house. Originally two cottages, the building was converted into one dwelling in the 1900s, with small additions such as a swimming pool inserted in recent years.
The design itself respects the architectural style of the original cottages, with the exterior treatment of the extension carefully referencing the existing elevations. The rear two storey extension rationalises the interior layout, providing large modern spaces that take advantage of views and access to the garden and pool areas. The kitchen, located in a vaulted double height space with exposed timber trusses, opens onto the rear garden and pool area. Large glazed doors provide the transition to the garden and fill the interior with light. The main living area, adjacent to the kitchen, has access through large sliding doors to a private internal courtyard. The terraced areas of the building allow the internal and external spaces to be used together for entertaining.
The relocation of the main staircase has improved the internal flows of the existing house. At first floor the bedrooms have been remodelled to introduce en-suites and a master suite has been created. Externally the hard landscaping has been designed to allow the house to open on to a series of terraces and pool area in the rear garden.
